I’ve gotten busy with tinsel and lights, and I thought you might like to take a peek into my Christmas decor.
Here is my Christmas tree. I’m a frugal person by nature, and I never want to spend a lot on seasonal decorating. That’s why I have an artificial tree. I can’t justify the expense of buying a 9′ living tree every year. I grew up with living trees, and loved the smell and the fuss of having to get them positioned just so in the tree stand. My mother would stand forever saying “a little to the left, no no too much. Now back to the right…. OK now rotate it….” to my exasperated father, who was getting more and more sap on his hands. Ah, tradition. Since my sister and I have left home, they’ve gone for the faux tree, too.
Anyway, I went with hats this year for the tree because I had about a million hats lying around, and because the girls can get in trouble for pulling stuff off the tree and not actually hurt themselves for the ornaments. I bought a 5 dollar box of plastic ornaments to fill in the gaps. Add the 10 bucks it costs to replace the strings of lights that didn’t work and the total for this year’s tree is 15 clams. Yea me! I think it is really cute.
This is my mantle. I got all silly with the Santa’s this year. Notice the macrame Santas on the sides of the mantle? Those were made in the 70’s I think; my mom had them for years, but gave them to me when they moved. I love them. Little extras from my childhood.
My sister knit the stoking on the far left. It’s Elly’s stocking. Lynn is working on one for Saralyn, too. Next year.
What do you like in Christmas Decor? Colored or white lights? Santas or Angles? What childhood tradition have you brought with you to adulthood?
You are soooo far ahead of me with the Christmas decor, as always! I love the Santa mantle!
Oh! I forgot to answer your questions! I like my Christmas decor either plaid and Victorian fancy, or outdoorsy. It’s a weird mix that I think pretty well describes my personality. ;- )
I like lots of greenery, bows, garlands, and recently, nutcrackers, and recently, snowmen. I prefer white lights. The most interesting childhood thing that I brought with me was not from my parents, but from my great-grandparents. My mom always prefered the giant tree-magnifico, but in the past few years (probably since I have no children) I’ve felt like it was too much trouble to put up a giant tree for just myself and Tony. But then I remembered that my great-grandmother -always- had a small, beautiful tree on the library table in her parlor, and suddenly it all fell into place for me. I not only felt relieved, in a sense that it wasn’t the size of the tree that made the Christmas bright, but the love in the home, and also a bit nostalgic for those family gatherings around the little tree in Great-grandma’s home.
heheh. I’ve now posted my next blog entry in YOUR blog!
Love ya,
Trish
