I’ve never seen an episode. Let’s start there. I don’t want to. I don’t like subjective game shows, or subjectively judged sports either. I like games like Jeopardy where there is, generally, ONE right answer. Hit it and you get the $$$, miss it and you lose. Simple. Clear cut. I also hate it when the Romanian judge favors his own nationality and shaves points off all the Germans and Ethiopian figure skaters. I’m no basketball fan, but at least if the ball goes through the hoop, you get the points.
I also hate cranky people. I didn’t care for Rosanne, the Simpsons or Jerry Springer. I don’t like watching people fight or be nasty to one another. If I wanted to see that, I’d watch my kids try to share a cookie.
So, you can see why I wouldn’t like AI.
But, I have a visitor this week. My friend Justin Taylor is in town to audition for the show. If he gets on, which he won’t know until Thursday, of course I will watch the show.
By the way, it”s a funny story how I’m friends with him. He wrote a song that I just love. It’s the theme song for one of my characters. You can click on the above link to listen to it. Go on. I’ll wait…. You love it, too!? Awesome. So. I myspaced him and asked if he would be doing any shows in Atlanta. He emailed back and said no, but then emailed a few days later and said he got a spot in the Monday night Eddie’s Attic singer / songwriter competition. I say WOW and that I will come see the show. He says, could he come stay at my house. WOW! That’s bold, but I had a good feeling about him after several email exchanges, and my husband seemed to be supportive, so we sais OK.
NEVER. Has there been a more polite house guest. He’s charming, and nice to my children. Did I say polite? Oh, yes. That was a month or so ago. I think God put Justin in my path so I could learn about his wife, who is studying Christian Counseling, and has given me some wonderful advice when I really needed it at work. It’s funny how these things work. The world really is a better place when people help one another.
So, all of that together is where my head is tonight; I’m thinking about how things enter one’s life and become personal, quite by accident. It’s like when people sometimes go to movies they know they are going to hate because a friend is dying to see it, and they see an actor that intrigues them. Friendship is like that. Loyalty gets you to do things you don’t care for, but it leads you to some kernel of newness. It makes one a better person, I think. The more you bend to be kind or supportive, the better friend you become.
Trust me, if Justin make Idol, you will never hear the end of it from me. I’ll make you all call and watch and vote and have parties. You just watch.
(So, you ever do that? What’s become personal for you on behalf of a friend?)
I watched American Idol for one season because of Diana Degarmo (I think it was season 3) she ended up coming in second that year.
I only watched it for her. I tried to watch it again later but it just didn’t mean anything anymore since there was no personal connection.
I can’t do AI. The overwrought teenagers, the endlessly drawn out results, the product placement, the shrieking, Ryan Seacrest, Paula Abdul, it’s all just too irritating. I’m one of those curmudgeons who doesn’t get how ANYONE can watch it. But should your friend get on I will…read here for updates.
Honestly, I can’t think of any personal causes I’ve taken on. That’s bad, right? That probably means I’ve got my head down and my blinders on.
Well – I guess I won’t have to make the sacrifice. Justin, bless his cute little heart – didn’t make the cut. He and several cans of Red Bull hit the road noon-ish today. It was a nice visit, however.
